Learning Activity 3: Helping Maria Navigate the Empty Nest

Module 3: Application — Practice, Reflect & Evaluate

Estimated Time: 5–7 minutes

Purpose

Apply what you have learned about Empty Nest Syndrome (ENS) and healthy coping mechanisms by examining realistic situations, making decisions, and reflecting on possible next steps.

Part 1: Identify ENS-Related Signs

Read the following two scenarios.

Scenario A: Maria

Maria’s youngest son, Alex, recently left for college. Since his departure, Maria has felt sad when she passes his empty bedroom. She misses their daily conversations and wonders how her role as a mother will change now that he is becoming more independent.

Scenario B: Jennifer

Jennifer’s youngest daughter still lives at home. Jennifer feels anxious because she has an important presentation at work tomorrow. Her worries are primarily related to preparing for the presentation.

Part 2: Select an Appropriate Coping Mechanism

Maria has started declining invitations from friends because she feels lonely and believes no one will understand her experience.

Question 1: Which coping strategy would most directly address Maria’s social isolation?

A. Continue avoiding social invitations
B. Reach out to a trusted friend for support
C. Stop discussing her feelings with others

Question 2: Maria thinks, “My son doesn’t need me anymore, so my role as a mother is over.”

Which response demonstrates cognitive reframing?

A. “My relationship with my son is changing, but I can still support him while developing new interests.”

B. “I should avoid thinking about the changes in my family.”

C. “I cannot enjoy life until my son returns home.”

Part 3: Reflect and Evaluate

Maria remembers that she once enjoyed painting. She considers setting aside time each week to return to this interest.

Reflect on the following questions:

1. How could painting help Maria express her emotions and adjust to the transition?

2. Which coping strategy would you recommend Maria try first: social connection, creative expression, or cognitive reframing? Why?

3. How might this strategy help Maria explore a new opportunity for personal growth?

You may reflect privately. You do not need to share your responses.

Part 1 – Recognizing ENS: Maria’s sadness and uncertainty are related to her son’s departure for college, while Jennifer’s anxiety is related to work.

Part 2 – Coping Strategies: Maria could reconnect with a trusted friend for emotional support and recognize that her role as a mother is changing, not ending.

Part 3 – Reflection: Painting could help Maria express her feelings and rediscover her interests. Social connection, creative expression, or cognitive reframing could support her emotional well-being and personal growth.

Your answers may differ. Think about whether your suggested strategies address Maria’s needs.

Key Takeaway

Recognizing the source of emotional responses, selecting appropriate coping strategies, and reflecting on their possible benefits can help mothers approach the empty nest transition with greater awareness and confidence.
